Hello!
I have been fascinated with Japan for most of my life. When I was a kid, I loved to watch anime, read manga, and eat Japanese food and candy :-) . Since then, I've developed a passion for studying Japanese culture, particularly Japanese art. While pursuing my undergraduate degree, I worked on several projects concerning Japanese art, design, and architecture; topics included the history of modern Tokyo residential buildings, the development of Japanese avant-garde fashion, and aspects of Japanese design such as wabi-sabi and iki.
I am now learning the Japanese language because I want to follow my passion for Japanese culture. I'm not exactly sure which direction I am headed professionally, but I intend to someday live in Japan.
The most difficult parts of learning Japanese so far has been listening and speaking, as opposed to reading and writing. During the language lab sessions I often find the recorded conversations extremely fast-paced, and the Japanese sounds different from the slower Japanese we practice in class. I also have difficulty speaking Japanese off the top of my head, especially when using cultural phrases.
I am very excited to study the Japanese language, and I look forward to continuing beyond this basic level!
